Final Activity Report Summary - FIST (Finite Structures)

During the project, Renyi Institute hosted experienced researchers for 72 months, and the fellows of Renyi Institute spent 26 month at the partner universities. The expertise of these experienced researchers was very stimulating. The success of the project was guaranteed by their exceptional knowledge. The main goal of the project was to cooperate with leading experts in different fields of discrete mathematics. It involves two different things, which are very much related to each other: on one hand, to achieve joint results, to prove nice theorems, to discover interesting phenomena in different combinatorial structures even if they are not joint results but as a result of the fruitful discussions, on the other hand, to have experts of discrete mathematics at Renyi Institute mostly from Europe, but from all around the world too, and to learn from them the most recent methods, the state-of-art results in their special area. The most important output of the project are its publication, even if the publications come sometimes just somewhat after the visits. It is clear that many further publications will be produced later and that sometimes the relation of the lectures and discussions to the forthcoming papers is less measurable. Counting just the discrete mathematics papers done by our incoming or outgoing visitors during their stay, the number of scientific publications in the project is 73. A similar number of publications enjoyed the support of the project indirectly, say by discussions of the visitors with the local researchers or by presenting results, problems and methods during the formal and informal talks, etc. During the project, two smaller workshops, and two bigger conferences were organized, altogether in 6 weeks. It is very exceptional that four such combinatorial events are organized in four consecutive years in the same (small) country. The highlight was the closing conference with more than 300 participants.

Project objective

Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics carries out high level research, as it was recognized by the title Centre of Excellence in the frame of the 5th Framework Programme. Our institute has especially old traditions in research of finite combinatorial structures. These research results and techniques are applied more and more widely in other areas, like number theory, group theory, or more generally abstract algebra and geometry. Though we have a solid background in combinatorics, still we have some areas where our competence should be developed. These areas are mostly, but not exclusively on the borderline of algebra and combinatorics. Transfer of knowledge is needed in these subjects to make Hungary and Europe competitive with the strong centres of the US in these fields too. The main objective of this proposal is to use the great scientific capacity of the discrete mathematics group of our highly evaluated institute in a more effective way, to integrate it into the network of the developed European discrete mathematical centres. For this purpose, we need financial support to host European experts of mathematics in the relevant subjects. If a discrete mathematics centre wants to live up to the information society's expectations, then it must develop many diverse subjects related to finite structures and have to integrate to big discrete mathematics networks and to establish a common knowledge. The main expected impact of this project is a few steps on this road. Furthermore, the project prospectively broadens the expertise of our team, increases our reputation in the mathematical community and helps us to keep our talented young researchers in the country.
