Project objective

In recent years, cosmology has become a data-driven field with a wealth of information available through different observations, mainly of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This project aims at developing new theoretical descriptions and statistical tools for the analysis of the forthcoming datasets. In this respect, we concentrate our efforts on three aspects: In order to obtain a more complete comprehension of cosmological data, we propose to incorporate new theoretical aspects in the data analysis processes. Including a broader theoretical framework will avoid prior-biased results and will give valuable information on many complementary fields like particle physics and quantum gravity. We also intend to include second-order effects that have to be accounted for in order to analyse the new generation of data. In an attempt to improve our understanding of subtle experimental and theoretical factors contributing to the data, we propose to generalise the use of phenomenological approaches. Finally, this projects aims at developing numerical methods suitable for the analysis of the new generation of cosmological data. This involves developing Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithms capable of dealing with theoretical aspects along with experimental factors in order to infer new constraints and to assess the statistical significance of such results. The development of a complete toolbox will ensure comparable results and a better understanding of the increasing number of parameters, both theoretical and experimental that have to be taken into account. Numerical codes will be made available to the scientific community and the close ties with the local experimental groups at the host institution (Boomerang, MITO) will provide a first-hand access to new CMB data.
