Project objective

The widespread and ubiquitous genus Ceramium has never previously been considered to have been involved in species invasions. However, recent unpublished data has highlighted the fact that this genus is divided into two biogeographical groups - North Atlantic/Mediterranean and Pacific/Southern Hemisphere. Only two species of Ceramium are found in both groups, namely Ceramium flaccidum and C. virgatum. This highlights the possibility that both of these species have been involved in reciprocal anthropogenic species introductions. It is the intention of this study to confirm whether either or both species have been involved in reciprocal introductions, and to locate the source of these introductions using uniparentally inherited organeliar markers. The intra- and interspecific genetic diversity will also be assessed. This study also seeks to develop microsatellite markers to determine the reproductive modes of different populations of both species, and to compare and contrast the different modes in their native and introduced populations. This information will be used to investigate mechanisms for invasions by marine red algae, and to shed light on reproduction in these complex marine algae
