Project objective

The research proposed involves the study of the changing nature of social movement collective action in therealm of immigration in light of the consolidation of immigration politics on a global scale. The project builds uponmy current research into the politics of pro-immigration social movements in Western Europe, applying the sameempirical approach to the context of the United States. The research proposed is deemed crucial due to theincreasing relationship between the processes of globalization and the specific politics of migration. No longer isit possible to analyse migration and immigration policy as a function of the politics of single state systems. In lightof this by now widely recognised fact, the analysis of the response of civil society to increased state repression ofimmigration must take into account the increased moves towards the transnationalisation of social movementactivism in this domain. My research into the European context has demonstrated the extent to which it isnecessary to take the analysis beyond the European context and test the research questions within a more wide-reaching framework. The main hypothesis proposed by the research is that collective action in the domain ofimmigration is undergoing increased transnationalisation as part of the nascent movement for a 'globalizationfrom below' to match the increased consolidation of immigration policies in what may be termed a globalmigration regime. The proposed research intends to carry out an in-depth political sociological study of the stateof the art of the campaign for immigrants' rights in the context of the United States, both through readings of thescholarly and activist literature and through direct qualitative research interviews with protagonists of suchcampaigns.
