Final Activity Report Summary - SURETE (Sustainable resource technologies)

This Early Stage Training Site at the University of Nottingham centred on combining expertise in science and engineering to deliver interdisciplinary training in sustainable resource technologies to provide the basis for research training in novel, ultra-efficient and environmentally benign resource processes. Over the period 11 fellows have obtained training in three research areas - high powered directed microwaves, microbial fuel cell technology and anaerobic digestion, particle-fluid swirling flows. All fellows were trained in a variety of relevant techniques as well as innovation and technology transfer and English language.

Project objective

This EST mono-site in the field of sustainable resource technologies is centred on an inter-disciplinary collaboration between the Schools of Physics and Astronomy; Mathematical Sciences; Chemistry; and Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The overall aim is to combine world-leading expertise in science and engineering to deliver interdisciplinary doctoral level training in sustainable resource technologies at an attractive training site. Major advances in granular dynamics, micro-gravity, high power microwaves and microbial fuel cells provide the basis for research training in novel, ultra-efficient and environmentally benign resource processing. These highly innovative techniques enable end-users to exert tight control over their processes and obtain substantial improvements in the efficiency of operations. The project will deliver 18 Fellow years of doctoral level training over a 4-year period and enhance the supply of researchers with the multi-disciplinary skills required to translate pioneering fundamental science concepts into a new generation of sustainable, resource efficient technologies. The research area is highly novel and the core facilities underpinning the research are world class and unique.Early stage researchers will benefit strongly from the opening up of new frontiers in scientific exploration in which they will be amongst the leading investigators. Innovative associated and complimentary training programmes aimed at encouraging inter-disciplinary collaboration, innovative thinking, personal and career development will provide researchers with excellent preparation for their future careers. The research area has very high potential impact, as it will result in development and dissemination of knowledge that will profoundly alter the cost, efficiency and environmental performance of major industrial processes.
