Project objective

The main objective of this proposal is to provide advanced research training of dr. W.G. Roeterdink at the Combustion Research Facility (CRF), Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California, on the emerging technique of Femtosecond Coincidence Imagi ng. This technique gives the most complete information possible about the electronic and nuclear changes during chemical reactions, all in real-time at the femtosecond time scale of the dynamics. Femtosecond Coincidence Imaging is pioneered in the laborat ory of dr. C.C. Hayden at the CRF and represents major advantage in the ultrafast time-resolved study of chemical dynamics. Dr. Roeterdink will be trained in this new laser based technology and will transfer this expertise during the return phase to the L aser Centre Vrije Universiteit (LCVU) Amsterdam, The Netherlands. At the LCVU, a member of LaserLab-Europe, he will lead the construction of a new femtosecond coincidence imaging facility, expanding the research facilities for visiting researcher within th e European Research Area. We will use the coincidence imaging technique in combination with advanced femtosecond pulse shaping to elucidate the mechanism of coherent quantum control of chemical dynamics. Dr. Roeterdink will do research in a world leadin g laboratory in the USA with unique cutting-edge technology in lasers and advanced single particle imaging detectors. Furthermore, he will be able to build up a scientific network abroad of importance for the further development of applicant as a scientis t. The Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowship will enable dr. Roeterdink to advance his abilities, expertise and skills to pursue a future independent scientific career in the European Reseach Area.
