Final Activity Report Summary - TRANSPORTNET TC (European Transport Research and Education Network - Training Courses)
The major target of the project was the education and training of young researchers in the field of transportation through of a series of training courses covering the following thematic areas: Transport Businesses and Markets; International Trade, Transport and Policy; Development and Management; and Urban Mobility. For each research area a specialised in-depth course stream was organised consisting of teaching, visits and study cases (short research projects). The whole duration for the completion of each "in depth" course stream is six weeks, divided into three periods: 1st period: two weeks of lectures and first stage of preparation of "cases". During this period, the students stayed in the university hosting the course. 2nd period: three weeks for the progress of "cases". During this period, the students were at their 'home' university. 3rd period: one week for the finalisation and presentation of the "cases". During this period, the students went back in the host university. The objective of the courses was to present various critical aspects of transport business and markets and provide the most recent developments and trends. The courses were addressed to students of an "early PhD" level. Therefore, it was assumed that the targeted students have already accomplished a first cycle of basic and advanced theoretical courses in transport economics, modelling and planning, are familiar with the relevant approaches and can follow specialized and research oriented topics. For each lecture and according to the topic, various teaching material were distributed to the students, such as notes, relevant published papers etc. The lectures were supported by the technological means (power point slide projection, simulation tools etc.). The choice of "cases" was done in relation to the topic's importance and scientific interest and also taking into account available data. Documents concerning the case framework and data sets were prepared and presented to the students during the "kick-off" meeting of the work groups. The networking was extremely intense between the students, and also between students and professors of the eight universities engaged. The results were very good and students showed high satisfaction on the way the training program was conducted.

Project objective
Good and reliable transportation systems contribute to economic growth and development, to cultural and social exchange and to the improvement of human relations. Mobility of people and goods is thus a central issue in today's societies. However, the increasing flows of transport also generate considerable external costs, such as: environmental damage, accidents, congestion, infrastructure, damage, etc.The education and training of young researchers in this field is one of the major targets of TRANSPORTNET, a network of eight European leading universities involved in transport research and education: Universiteit Antwerp (UA), Instituto Superior Tecnico Lisboa (IST), Universität Karlsruhe (IWW), Universita di Genova (UNIGE-DIEM), Ecole Polytechnique Federal e de Lausanne (EFPL), Technische Universiteit Delft (TUD), Laboratoire d'Economie des Transports Lyon (LET), and University of the Aegean (STTAEGEAN).The network was setup in 2003 having its main purpose the co-operation in the field of transportation research and research training. This is and will continue to be realised by the exchange of Professors in the Master, PhD and post-doctoral programmes, the exchange of students, the organisation of summer courses and master classes, the co-operation in research programmes, and the creation of a European PhD programme in Transportation.It is the strategic option of the network to have a consistent approach between the research streams, where early stage researchers will develop, and the training courses where synergies can be obtained through the interaction with practitioners and more senior researchers. The two instruments are seen as rather complementary for the consolidation of research strengths in transportation.As part of this strategy the network submitted a previous proposal to the Marie Curie call for early stage research Training (now under negotiation), which is now complemented with this series of training courses.
