PETER · Predicting the emergence and transmission in Europe of drug resistant HIV

Project objective

During the past ten years significant progress has been made in the treatment of HIV-infected patients. Unfortunately, this success is jeopardized by the emergence and spread of drug resistant HIV. Although a considerable proportion of patients carries a drug resistant virus, there is still only limited evidence that drug resistance leads to rapid clinical progression. But in the next years, the emergence of complex drug resistant viruses that are difficult to treat can increase.A major public health concern is that these drug resistant viruses can be transmitted to newly infected individuals. In the current project, a mathematical model will be constructed that includes the complexity of drug resistance. The model aims to timely predict the future trend, and key factors explaining the emergence and transmission of drug resistant HIV. The results of the model will be of use to public health authorities, the clinical community, pharmaceutical industry and patient populations to prevent the further emergence and spread of drug resistant HIV.The present project offers a unique opportunity to combine Europe's leading role in the epidemiology of drug resistant HIV with the knowledge of a renowned expert in the field of mathematical modelling resistant HIV. The outgoing phase of this project will take place at the department of biomathematics of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) AIDS institute. This department is internationally acclaimed for its work on mathematical modelling of drug resistant HIV. During the return phase the acquired knowledge will be applied at the department of virology of the University Medical Centre Utrecht, the Netherlands. This department is the successful coordinator of several European research networks on drug resistant HIV.
