Project objective

The interactions between colloidal particles determine stability of colloidal systems, phase behaviour of concentrated suspensions and their viscoelastic properties. Also the short-range interactions between particles and interfaces are the driving force for the adsorption (deposition or adhesion) of nano- and colloidal particles. Effective adsorption of colloid and bioparticles is important for many practical processes. Learning about mechanisms of adhesion of colloids is also relevant for polymer science, biophysics and medicine. The main scientific objective of this project is the development of effective numerical methods for studying of electrostatic interaction in a variety of colloidal systems. These methods will be based on the solution of the non -linear Poisson-Boltzmann (P-B) equation, which governs the distribution of ionic charges around colloid particles. The methods developed for two- and three-dimensional P-B problem will be specifically applied to study many-body interaction between particles. In particular the problem of interaction of colloidal particles at the vicinity of the charge wall, which is crucial for understanding colloid adsorption phenomena will be considered. The results of theoretical modelling will be confronted with experiments performed on model colloidal systems under controlled transport conditions. The collaboration initiated during the project will be long lasting, since, with increase of computing power, the modelling of the colloidal interaction is scientifically very broad and expanding field. It can have also high technological potential facilitating to produce the suspensions with desired properties.
