Project objective
The objective of this project is to develop new computational models for chemical sensor arrays inspired by information processing in the biological olfactory pathway. Particularly, we propose to mimic four processing mechanisms: redundancy, contrast enhancement, associative memory, and mixture segmentation. These computational models will be validated with chemical sensor arrays and their computational complexity explored in order to implement them in portable processing devices (embedded systems, DSP-base d system). This research is of special relevance at this time because of the enormous advance produced in recent years in biological olfaction (2004 Nobel Prize in Medicine/Physiology).The understanding of the olfactory system derived from this advance makes now possible to build computational engines inspired by the architecture of the olfactory pathway. To conduct this research, the background of the researcher in computational models of the olfactory system combined with the ample expertise of the host institution, University of Barcelona, in chemical sensors will be extremely useful. Advanced training activities will be focused on providing the researcher knowledge in chemical sensing devices, instrumentation for chemical sensors and signal and data pro cessing for smart sensing systems.Additionally, the wide European connections of the University of Barcelona through the network of Excellence GOSPEL (NoE, FP6-IST-507610), General Olfaction and Sensing Projects at the European Level) will allow the researcher to collaborate with high quality research groups working in the field. These two factors (advanced training, international collaboration) will significantly facilitate the researcher to acquire a position of professional maturity and independence. Finally, the proposed research is clearly within the scope of two of the seven thematic priorities of the FP6 program: (1) Information Society Technologies (IST) and (2) Food quality and safety.
