Project objective

Throughout the industry, and the scientific community, measurement is perceived as being pervasive as a fundamental engineering tool. Until recently in software engineering, 'software metrics' have most often been proposed as the quantitative tools of choice, and analysis of these tools was most often carried out them from the perspective referred to as measurement theory". However, in other disciplines, it is the domain of knowledge referred to as "metrology" that is the foundation for the development and use of measurement instruments and measurement processes.In the software engineering literature, numerous practitioners and researchers have proposed hundreds of 'software measures', or 'software metrics'. To help industry assess the quality of these proposed measures, various researchers have proposed various approaches to software measurement validation, none of which has yet been widely used by either designers or users of software measures. To tackle this diversity, this research chair program will review proposed validation frameworks using a key ISO document on measurement, that is, the ISO Vocabulary on Metrology as well as a measurement process model derived from an analysis of the individual validation proposals.The metrology concepts in particular have facilitated a greater understanding of the set of measurement sub-concepts that must be included in each of the steps from the design of a measurement method to the use of the measurement results. This research chair program will build upon previous research results to develop and design a metrology related approach to software measurement."
