Project objective
Ventilation-based strategies to control terrorism involving chemical, biological or radioactive (CBR) agents. Techniques for predicting health risks, for designing concepts for protection of buildings and their occupants, and for simulating accident scenarios will be reviewed and developed. Problems to be analysed by Computational Fluid Dynamics and/or experimental methods include: Detection, transport of airborne hazardous substances, confinement, or removal of such substances. Accident reports of recent terrorist attacks will be reviewed.Typical scenarios will be assessed regarding the employed methods of attack, agents used, actual evacuation success, and spread of harmful substances. Preventive measures in place at time of attack and lessons learned from each incident will be studied. Based on these findings, effective preventive measures and ventilation-based strategies will be proposed. Their effectiveness will be evaluated by computer simulation. Computational Fluid Dynamics, CFD, will be used to predict spread of harmful gases and their local concentrations as functions of time and position.Impact of toxic dose on human organism will be estimated to obtain an approximate probability for survival of building occupants or for the degree of injury. The determination of probability of escape will require accurate information on propagation speed of the toxic gas cloud as well as of movement of the persons on their escape route.
