Project objective

This project aims to bring together two existing efforts in modelling the automated generation of stories, that used in ProtoPropp, developed in Madrid using AI techniques, and that used in MEXICA, developed in Mexico based on the Engagement-Reflection cycle, a psychological theory of how humans compose stories. The integration of the two different approaches should lead to a richer computational model of story generation. A fellowship is requested for Dr. Rafael Pérez y Pérez, developer of MEXICA, to come to Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where ProtoPropp is currently under development by a team of researchers. The research group at UCM has ongoing collaborations with related research efforts in Europe: on interactive narrative (University of Teeside, U K), conceptual blending (U. of Coimbra, Portugal), and narratology (U. of Hamburg). There is an ongoing bilateral integrated action with U. of Coimbra, and several of those sites have participated in a proposal for a coordination action on related topics under the FET program of FP6.The proposed project intends to construct a generic computational model for the generation of narrative integrating all these different techniques. The integration and cooperation between these techniques would be structured around a formalised representation of the relevant knowledge in terms of an ontology, constructed as an extension to the ProppONTO and KIDSOnto ontologies developed using the OWL standard by the Madrid team, and it should be progressively extended to account for the concepts involved in the new techniques over the duration of the project.This ontology, as a reusable resource in a standard format, would be a valuable result of this project. The researcher benefiting from the fellowship is a pioneer in the field of computational creativity for text generation in his country, and he has projects for establishing a specialised research group on this topic in Mexico in the future.
