Project objective
Miniaturisation has become a driver of technological and scientific advance for problems that can only be solved by combinatorial approaches, requiring comprehensive testing of each member of a library. We now plan to develop a new technology based on the idea of minimising the volume of biological and chemical reactions further.Normally, each experiment in biology or chemistry is performed in a tube or multi-well plate. We now want to perform performed each assay in a separate microscopic droplet, with a volume one billion times smaller than a conventional assay. These droplets will be formed, manipulated and analysed in a microfluidic system, consisting of a network of microscopic channels through which the droplets will flow in a stream of oil.We aim to demonstrate their utility of this technology to search large numbers of compounds to develop new catalysts in directed evolution experiments.
