Project objective
In brief, the proposed project is about the influence of selective grazing of marine bacteria on the transfer of autochthonous versus allochthonous carbon. It appears that there are different bacterial life strategies - fast growth on high quality substrates and high sensitivity to grazing, and slow growth on low quality substrates and low sensitivity to grazing.Due to qualitative differences in dissolved organic matter (DOM) of autochthonous and allochthonous origin, the selective grazing of bacteria by flagellates should have consequences to the transfer of DOM of different origin. In that sense, selective flagellate grazing, which is very efficient, can influence carbon cycling in the ocean.
