Project objective
This project aims to construct novel luminescent interlocked molecular assemblies via anion templation, which exhibit unique anion recognition and sensing behaviour. In particular we intend prepare rotaxane and catenane derivates, these types of compounds have enormous potential in nano-technological applications such as devices, switches and molecular machines. This project for sensor development exploits the rotaxane and catenane cavities as binding domains due to their unique three dimensional topological interlocked cavity design and has the potential to exhibit unique selective anion sensing behaviour via the sensitivity of fluorophore emission to anion complexation. The project includes in a first step the synthesis and characterization of the catenanes and rotaxanes funtionalized with the fluorescent moieties, and in a second step the study of the sensing abilities for anions, for this purpose near infrared emitting species will be of higher interest to avoid interferences. As one of the main points in the sensor developments is the preparation of heterogeneous devices for reversible and continuous monitoring of the anion concentration these systems will be incorporated on silica or glass to create surface-confined anion-templated rotaxane and catenane capable of high-specificity, high-affinity, anion sensing.
