Results in brief

Final Activity Report Summary - BIO-NCHIPS (Self-Assembly of bio-nanochips)

The current project was devoted to the design, synthesis and investigation of chemical and physical properties of [2×2] grid-type complexes bearing biological residues (amino-acids, oligopeptides, nucleosides or long aliphatic chains). The decorated [2x2] grid-type complexes formed starting from hydrazone-containing ligands combine the features of the two components: i) ligands bearing functional groups able to recognise other molecules by non-covalent interactions; and ii) the metal ions with their optical, magnetic and redox properties modulated by the environment (the primary and secondary coordination spheres). The self-assembly of a specific multimetallic architecture from a set of organic ligands and metal ions, as a result of the processing of the structural information stored within the ligands by the metal ions operating through the coordination algorithm, may lead to materials with intriguing physical and chemical properties. In this respect, grid-like metalloarrays undergoing reversible switching processes of optical, magnetic and redox properties triggered by external stimuli (physical or chemical) are promising candidates for high-density information storage devices or sensing devices.

Project objective

The current proposal is devoted to the design, synthesis and investigation of chemical and physical properties of 2 2 grid-type complexes bearing biological residues, such as amino-acids, oligopeptides, nucleosides, oligonucleosides, carbohydrates or long aliphatic chains. The project involves the following specific objectives:- Design and synthesis of functionalized hydrazone-based ligands with side-chains bearing biological residues: amino-acids, oligopeptides, nucleosides, oligonucleosides, carbohydrate s or long aliphatic chains.- Self-assembly of these hydrazone-based ligands with metal ions presenting preference for octahedral stereochemistry to yield cationic 2 2 grid-type complexes presenting 4, 8 or 12 side-chains.- Self-assembly of hydrazone-base d ligands with bis(pyridyl)pyridazine ligands and metal ions showing a preference for penta-coordination in order to obtain 2 2 grid presenting 2 side-chains on one single face.- Investigation of the capacity of biorecognition between 2 2 metallo-grid presenting 4 side-chains bearing a specific oligonucleotides sequence (codonC) and the complementary oligonucleotides sequence (anticodonAC), or between two different 2 2 metallo-grids bearing complementary oligonucleotides sequence.¿Insertion of 2 grid-type complexes with two long aliphatic chains on one single face in lipophilic membranes and investigation of the pH-modulation of their redox and optical properties.
