Project objective

As Europe is rapidly moving towards a knowledge-based economy, there is a pressing need to promote universal life-long learning and training of its workforce. In this context, computer-based education is becoming a critical resource to complement human tutoring in a large variety of fields and settings. The goal of the proposed project is to conduct research on using socially intelligent pedagogical agents (SIPAs) to further improve the effectiveness of computer-based training and learning. SIPAs are intelligent software agents that are capable of engaging students in tailored interactions focused on achieving specific educational goals. The interaction tailoring is performed by taking into account the student's cognitive states, the student's meta-cognitive skills, preferences, personality traits, and emotional reactions, to provide the learner with effective pedagogical support. Although in the last few years there has been an increasing interest in animated pedagogical agents and there is already some empirical evidence of their effectiveness, research in this field has so far been mostly limited to devising agents with a specific pedagogical role within a specific educational activity. Little work has been done on making these agents able to adapt to different users' cognitive capabilities and emotional states and to support effective collaborative interactions.Furthermore, the development of such agents is currently an extremely time consuming process. Our goal is to overcome these problems by devising a SIPA framework as a set of principles, techniques and tools that will facilitate the design, development and testing of SIPAs with a wide range of personalities, coaching, and mentoring styles that are applicable to many content areas and types of learning experiences. We propose a research that is multidisciplinary in nature. It aims to integrate and advance research in Artificial Intelligence, Human Computer Interaction and Educational Technology.
