NOVOMAT · Development of a novel biomaterial for cardiovascular applications

Project objective

The principal objective of this proposal is to develop a critical mass of researchers in cardiovascular biomaterials toward the development of the next generation of cardiovascular devices. The National Centre for Biomedical Engineering (NCBES) has develop ed a patented biomaterial that needs the expertise in characterisation and translational studies to take this unique biomaterial to the prototype stage. There is a lack of expertise in the area of biomaterial modifications and basic blood compatibility studies.The current strength of materials scientists, engineers, clinicians and biologists who have worked in the cardiovascular area makes this proposal an apparent choice of growth for the NCBES. The proximity of Galway to the leading cardiovascular medical device industry is also a compelling reason for this proposal. The technical innovation of this project lies in the fact that this research is a platform for the development of the next generation of cardiovascular biomaterials. The patented novel elastomeric substrate will be developed to create a whole array of a combinatorial family of biomaterials. In parallel these substrates will be characterised on a cellular level and appropriate modifications will be made simultaneously.
