FLORAVIS · Vegetation modelling for 3D visualisation in landscape research and practice

Project objective

The goal of this project is to develop and expand the Lenné3D software for vegetation modelling and interactive 3D visualisation for landscape research and practice. Potential applications include environmental impact assessment, public participation, urban planning and landscape architecture. Deliverables will support European policy objectives, e.g. Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive, Common Agricultural Policy and the European Landscape Convention. The Lenné3D system is capable of generating highly realistic landscape visualisations, extending from large landscape scenes to individual plant species. Combining the newest computer graphics technology with botanical precision, it can generate millions of 3D plants derived from GIS-data; thus creating life-like 3D landscape models to interactively communicate with clients, decision makers and citizens in real-time. To perform this, precise information on plant communities, 3D models and ecological characteristics of individual plant species are provided by Lenné3D's knowledge and data base.The project will expand this data base that is currently limited to Central-European flora. It will produce English-language resources such as online help and tutorials, explore user requirements and, supported by research in landscape visualisation, will function as a gateway to a wider European and international market. The project partners have been in frequent contact since the development of the software started some years ago.We will achieve our technical and partnership goals through an exchange of personnel and collaborative research, development and knowledge transfer activities. With the launch of the business products it is now the ideal time to strengthen the collaboration and to establish a long-lasting partnership of mutual benefit between the University of Sheffield and Lenné3D in terms of educating students, developing and conducting research, and expanding the business to new markets and applications.
