Final Activity Report Summary - HDGEC (Marie Curie Summer Schools on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change)
This project has successfully implemented a series of four Marie Curie PhD training events on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. The PhD training events were held back-to-back with the annual European Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change ('European Conference Series on Global Environmental Change'). Combining the PhD training events series with the European Conference Series has benefited European researchers in their early career stages in two ways: First, it allowed young European researchers to participate in a conference series of international reputation through a Marie Curie contribution to the participant fees. Second, it provided in-depth training for young European researchers back-to-back to this conference in the form of training events that benefited from the high quality of many of the plenary speakers who attend the European Conferences. The PhD training events were held annually, always back to back with the European Conferences, over the period 2007-2010. The PhD training events had an average duration of ten days: two days participation in the conference and eight days participation in the training course. The four PhD training events formed a consistent and coherent program under the overall heading of 'earth system governance'. This theme has been chosen to reflect both the current state of discussion in the field of global environmental change and the on-going attempts at integrating natural and social science in this field. Consequently, it was the prime motivation of this series of events to educate and train young European scientist to successfully participate in these debates. This goal has been achieved.

Project objective
The applicants propose a series of four Marie Curie Summer Schools on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. The summer schools would be held back-to-back with the annual European Conferences on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (European Conferences), which are endorsed by the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), as well as by major European research programmes. Combining the Summer School series with the European Conferences will benefit European researchers in their early career stages, by enabling them to participate in a conference series of international reputation (through a contribution to participant fees) and by ensuring a high level of quality of lecturers (because keynote speakers and other senior conference speakers can be recruited to give lectures at the Summer School).The summer schools would occur annually over the period from 2007 to 2010. Each summer school will be ten days' duration and bring together about 40 young European researchers. The four summer schools will form a consistent and coherent programme of four training events under the overall theme of earth system governance. This theme has been chosen to reflect both the current state of discussion in the field of human dimensions of global environmental change, and the recent attempts at integrating social and natural science research in this field.This integration stands at the centre of comprehensive models of earth system analysis and sustainability science, which try to bring together most academic disciplines at multiple spatial and temporal scales. To educate and train young European social scientists to participate in these global debates and to shape the future European contribution in the social sciences to this worldwide research programme, is the motivation for this series of Summer Schools.
