Project objective

Mutation is the ultimate source of all genetic variation, including the variation that is responsible for genetic disease. It is therefore important to understand the process by which mutation occurs. The principal aim of the proposed work is to gain a better understanding of the process of mutation in the genome of several species including our own. In particular, it will be investigated whether there is variation in mutation rate on a fine-scale such that adjacent bases can have different rates of mutation. Moreover, it will be studied whether sequence- or template- directed mutagenesis is prevalent in the human genome, whether it may generate disease causing mutations and whether it is responsible for compensatory evolution. The analysis will be performed on DNA sequence data, including whole genome sequences from several species, using bioinformatic and statistical approaches. It is anticipated that the work will shed new light on the process of mutation and how genetic variation is produced. It is also anticipated that the work will substantially increase our understanding of molecular evolution.
