Final Activity Report Summary - DEV-BIOSOFC (Development of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Hybrid System with Bio-fuels for Distributed Energy Generation)

All planed internal and external meetings has been done with recruited researchers from foreign country and with host staff members sent to partner institutions. We organised regular seminars and series of lectures for laboratory people as well as for the public; these concerned fuel fell technology, fuel storage, heat exchange and thermal management in solid oxide fuel cells, physical and numerical modelling. The staff member involved in this project got special training in modern fuel cell laboratories in Shibaura Institute of Technology, in Genova University, in Laboratory of Thermal Engineering University of Twente, and in Laboratory for Industrial Energy Systems, Institute of Energy Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. The International Workshop on Development of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Hybrid System with Biofuels for Distributed Energy Generation was held in Krakow, Poland from 22 - 23 November 2010. This international workshop contains eight invited lectures and nine papers, all of which include recent major developments in both the fundamentals and applications of fuel cells, and provide valuable information both to researchers and students dealing with fuel-cell systems. Special mini symposium on Fuel-Cell Systems within the seventh World Conference on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics (ExHFT-7) was held in Krakow, Poland from 28 June - 03 July 2009. The special issue of the mini symposium on Fuel Cell Systems of the seventh World Conference on Experimental Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics (ExHFT-7) ISBN 978-83-7464-266-8 has been published. Special mini symposium on Fuel-Cell Systems within 21st International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems (ECOS 2008) was held in Krakow, Poland in June 24-27, 2008. A series of lectures given by recruited staff has been published in printed form and was attached to the annual report. Several presentations of current research have done during international conferences and are presented in dissemination of results. In total 21 publications and 18 presentations on International Conferences has been done during fourth project period, 18 publications and 17 presentations on International Conferences has been done during third project period and total 16 full papers has been published in international journals and 15 has been presented on conferences and printed in conference papers at first half of the project period.

Project objective

The development of a more efficient distributed electricity generation system is one environmentally friendly approach to the more effective utilisation of energy and, as a result, to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Urban and agriculture areas can produce bio-fuel from municipal waste and biomass, both of which are important sources of renewable fuel. A hybrid system that combines Bio-fuels and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells with Micro Gas Turbines holds great promise as a distributed electricity generation system. Our research into the development of this process will involve a variety of branches of science and technology which are promising in the 21st century. The combined knowledge and experience of the researchers from these fields will be introduced to enhance local scientific potential in the areas of: numerical modelling, energy analysis, material processing and mechanical and chemical engineering. Researchers from various scientific centres will greatly influence the anticipated results of our investigation. The project will also provide the opportunity to transfer knowledge to the Host institution and for experienced local staff members to receive invaluable training in foreign laboratories, which will improve their scientific and technical skills. The main purpose of the project is to set up a framework of Bio-fuels and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells with Micro Gas Turbines hybrid systems, with great mobility among the researchers from the various universities and research centres involved. This will be accomplished through the creation of a consortium of EU higher education institutions, which will develop a joint research and study programme. The research topic of this project is fully compatible with EUROPEAN COMMISSION, Communication from the Commission: ENERGY FOR THE FUTURE: RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY - White Paper for a community Strategy and Action Plan (COM (97) 599 final (26/11/1997)).
