Final Activity Report Summary - LITCOAST (Management of coastal forests of Lithuania: sustaining and enhancing forest health through silviculture)

Coastal forests and dune vegetation at the Baltic Sea are important and often unique ecosystems of considerable habitat conservation and recreation value to society. Interdisciplinary approach of the European Commission MarieCurie LITCOAST project combined the best practices of silviculture and forest microbiology and pathology to enhance health and sustainability of coastal forests and dune vegetation which was achieved through identification of beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms associated with tree seedlings in forest nurseries and following their transfer to the field, use of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi for artificial root mycorrhization to increase seedling vitality, risk assessment and prognosis of tree decline, assessment of biodiversity in coastal vegetation and elaboration a complex of practical measures for improved forest management. Achievements of LITCOAST project highlight the importance of industry - academia partnership for exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge and its implementation into the practice in order to meet the objectives of EU policy for sustainable management of coastal zones and integrated concepts for the multipurpose utilisation of forest resources.

Project objective

Coastal forests and dune vegetation are important ecosystems of considerable habitat conservation and recreation value to society. The aim of LITCOAST is the enhancement of health and sustainability of coastal forests and dune vegetation of Lithuania achieved through 1) identification of beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms in tree seedlings in forest nurseries and following the transfer to field plantations; 2) different methods of seedling mycorrhization, increasing their vitality; 3) risk assessment, identification and prognosis of tree decline on postfire sites; 4) identification of causes of gap formation and its dynamics in older forest stands; 5) developing novel silvicultural measures for gap restoration and minimising losses; 6) assessment of biodiversity in coastal vegetation, and outlining the measures for its sustainability and increase; 7) elaborating a complex of practical measures for improved forest management; 8) maintenance of permanent study and demonstration plots to be used in future research and teaching, thus enhancing further transfer of knowledge. The aims will be achieved by collaboration between experienced researchers from the main contractor Dept. Forest Mycology and Pathology, SLU, and staff of Kretinga Forest Enterprise (host), and Kursiu Nerija National Park (sub-contractor), both responsible for forest management along the entire Baltic Sea coast of Lithuania. LITCOAST conforms with the objectives of the 6th Framework Programme Sub-Priority Global Change and Ecosystems and is highly relevant for the research area Integrated management of coastal zones and integrated concepts for the multipurpose utilisation of forestry resources. Implementation of the project will result in the establishment of the host organisation as a service provider in forest health issues to other forest enterprises in Lithuania, and internationally, - throughout the Baltic Sea region, and other regions of Europe with similar coasts.
