Project objective

An understanding of the impact of global climate change on animal and plant populations is of critical importance both to the conservation and management of current biodiversity, and for predicting the effects of future change. Ancient DNA provides a unique new way to examine environmental change through time, allowing known climatic and environmental events such as the last glacial maximum (LGM) or the introduction of humans, to be contrasted with genetic changes recorded in ancient bones and sediments. We will use the excellent mammalian fossil record of European caves, swamp deposits and off-shore sediments to study the effects of climate change on two wide-ranging herbivore populations, the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) and the bison (Bison bonasus) over the past 50,000 years (kyr).
