Project objective
Black carbon (BC), the predominant source of solar absorption in atmospheric aerosol, can be present therein as pure BC particles distinct from purely scattering particles (external mixture), homogeneously mixed with purely scattering components (homogeneous internal mixture) or as BC core particles coated with scattering components (coated internal mixture).Depending on the assumption on the state of mixture in a climate model, the resulting radiative forcings range from negative (cooling) for external mixtures to potentially as positive (warming) as for the greenhouse gas methane for coated internal mixtures on global average. The assumptions on the BC state of mixture made in the models can currently not be verified in the atmosphere as there is no method to measure the BC state of mixture. This proposal will provide a method to measure the BC state of mixture while following an air parcel in order to study the temporal evolution of the BC mixture state.
