Project objective

Although being used for a longer time for fatigue resistant applications, the fatigue behavior of composites in fact is not well understood yet. Major differences with metals for example are: the early onset and growth of more or less widespread damage (from the first cycles on), as well as the associated gradual degradation of the stiffness properties (up to 30% and more). Simulation of damage growth and stiffness reduction is therefore quite different than for metals and adequate numerical tools are non-existent.The proposed project aims at studying the feasibility of monitoring the mechanical behavior in fatigue of composite materials by two non- destructive means: first, thanks to ultrasonic polar scans; the images resulting of these latter kinds of fingerprint of the elastic properties of the material, different for each orthotropic composite material.
