Project objective
Carbohydrate scaffolds offer a large family of monomers with the ability to tune predisposition towards specific secondary structures. This project will investigate the potential for conformational control in small molecules by four membered (oxetane) rings. This project will study the efficient synthesis of monomers containing oxetane moieties, both as didpetide isosteres and as beta-amino amino building blocks. This will involve synthesis of monomers, well-defined preparation of ecologically friendly biopolymers, together with structural studies to determine the outcome of the synthetic work. Collaboration will include the incorporation of oxetane determinants into combinatorial libraries. Preliminary modeling shows that four ring structures are likely to be the best frameworks for the control of secondary structures in short sequences. There have been no reports of the use of four membered rings to control structural features.
