TEMPLATE-ASSISTED DEPOSITION OF FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS AND DEVICES

Executive Summary: The TEMADEP project has been an excellent opportunity for fruitful collaboration between partners. They have been involved in secondments, meetings international workshop, organized in Belgium, Lithuania, Moldova and France. Outstanding research has been done in order to understand interdependencies between structure and properties of tungsten and molybdenum alloys, as well capability and competence to implement achieved results by networking with other institutions, namely Universitat Autonoma Barcelona (UAB) and IMEC, which is in the line with one of the project objective - strengthen the EU expertise and establishment of cooperation in the field of nanomaterials and nanodevices. Thus, the project efforts were combined to study nanostructured materials consisting of iron group metals alloys that are especially appropriate for use in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) where microstructures with high mechanical strength and wear resistance coupled to a high thermal resistance and stability against plastic deformation are required. Of main interest was producing of nanowires and heterostructures (multilayers) obtained by electrochemical ways and the relationship between structural properties and synthesis conditions. These nanomaterials were optimized to achieve the pre-requisites for MEMS electroforming, e.g. in collaboration with IMEC, in the view of microbumps application. Also, template-assisted electrodes for sensors were electroformed. These electrodes consist on the array of “nanomatches” having shank of Co-W alloy (2 m length and 100 nm in diameter) and golden head (50 nm in diameter). The maps of the corrosion behaviour and magnetic properties of the most promising Co-W alloys was created based on the study of a number of alloys having different content of W (0-31 at.%) and structure (polycrystalline and “amorphous-like). Another key objective – intensification of cooperation between member states (Belgium, Lithuania and France) and Third countries (USA and Moldova) in the area of nanostructured template-assisted materials was also successfully achieved, by joint scientific activities and publication of joint papers in journals with impact factor. Partners were also active in creating new opportunities for a further exploration of materials science: a) By submitting 5 projects in the framework of FP7 program: MRC-IAP (ERA-WIDE), Oil&Sugar (IRSES), EC-MODEL and IAPSEC (2 REGPOT), INOUT-transResearch (CIG Marie Curie Actions) and preparing new ITN project within Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions in Horizon 2020; b) By submitting 4 bilateral and national projects: SCOPES, Ukraine - Moldova, Lithuanian Science Council Foundation, and Moldovan National Foundation.

Project objective

Template-based deposition for the synthesis of nanowires and nanotubes is extensively reported for metals, alloys, and semiconductors. Properties and possible applications of such nanostructured materials were investigated to some extent; inclusive by parties cooperating in this project, but there is still a large need for an ample scientific study in order to support a future implementation in the European industry. This multidisciplinary project comprises research activities in electrochemistry, materials science, surface technology, film/nanostructures characterization, tribology, and corrosion science, and includes the electrodeposition, structural, mechanical, morphological characterization of deposits, corrosion and wear protection. The low cost electrodeposition of the following alloys is of interest in this project, namely alloys containing iron group metals, tungsten-containing iron group alloys, Mo-Ni alloys. Taking into account the large potential of such procedures for the electroforming of nanostructures and MEMS, the objective of this project is to intensify research activities to select and to improve existing procedures and plating bath formulations to deposit nanocrystalline films with a roughness equal or less than the roughness of the substrates. The films/coatings must posses pre-specified structural, mechanical, tribological, and chemical properties that are necessary to apply them in electroformed nanostructures such as nanowires/nanotubes, and in MEMS. Mapping of tribological, thermal, magnetic and corrosion behavior of films/coatings and nanowires/nanotubes, and MEMS will perform. The market potential of obtained results will analyze.
