Накратко на български

Изкуствени молекулярни мотори, задвижвани от светлина, се тестват за въртене върху повърхности и в разтвори. Това помага да се разбере как тези системи извършват механична работа и как движението им зависи от околната среда.

Цел на проекта

The construction of artificial molecular machines, ubiquitous in nature, is a major contemporary challenge. The first rotary molecular motor developed by Feringa's group immediately raised the question if these systems would be suitable to become part of multicomponent systems or be able to connect to surfaces as this will ultimately be required to allow the construction of molecular machinery. To do so, these systems have distinct upper (propeller part) and lower halves (stator part). The symmetric lower half can be used for connection to other molecules or surfaces whereas the upper half acts as a rotor. The aim of the proposed program is to visualize rotary motion of a surface bound light driven motor and to unequivocally show that non-Brownian motion can be induced by molecular motors and rotary motors can perform work. This project will be part of a major program combining Surface bound motors and Motors at work. Initially the research will focus on the construction of motors with legs that can be attached to various surfaces following our recent construction of the first surface bound unidirectional rotary motor. The flexibility in design is an important aspect as there is no information nor precedent how the rotary motion will depend on distance to surface, flexibility of the legs and lower part, and direct surroundings in the monolayers. Furthermore and in parallel the motors will be decorated with long side arms in order to study mechanical movement in solution (viscosity dependence) and motors functionalized with helical polymer in order to amplify the motor motion. The focus will be on design, synthesis of the molecular systems and preliminary isomerisation studies and then physical measurements including surface studies and LC measurements expertise.
