Environmentally Friendly Coastal Protection in a Changing Climate

EnviCOP (Environmentally Friendly COastal Protection in a Changing Climate) was funded by 7thFramework Programme of the EU under the People Programme in the research area Marie Curie Action "International Research Staff Exchange Scheme" - FP7-PEOPLE-2011-IRSES. Participants involved within EnviCOP project were: • SECONDA UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI NAPOLI, Italy (SUN) • UNIVERSITA POLITECNICA DELLE MARCHE, Italy (UNIVPM) • POLITECNICO DI MILANO, Italy (POLIMI) • UNIVERSIDADE DO PORTO , Portugal (FEUP) • BLACK SEA – DANUBE COASTAL ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, Bulgaria (BDCA) • SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, USA (SIO) • UNIVERSITY OF VALE DO ITAJAÍ, Brazil (UNIVALI) The project focused on 5 major research topics: 1. Sea-level rise and Hydrodynamics of Coastal Zone 2. Dune erosion protection & Shoreline management 3. Artificial Reefs & Beach nourishment 4. Beach Drainage system as a littoral stabilization 5. Coastal protection combined with Wave energy utilisation Six Workshop meeting have been held during the project: 1. Workshop meeting # 1, (Kick-off), Milano, Italy organized by POLIMI, 27 July 2012 2. Joint Research Seminar # 1 and Workshop meeting # 2 Lisbon, Portugal organized by FEUP , 5 June 2013 3. Joint Research Seminar # 2 and Workshop meeting # 3 Aversa, Italy organized by SUN, 16 - 17 October 2013 4. Joint Research Seminar # 3 and Workshop meeting # 4 Porto, Portugal organized by FEUP , 14-15 April 2014 5. Joint Research Seminar # 4 and Workshop meeting # 5 Varna, Bulgaria organized by BDCA , 30 September – 1 October 2014 6. Joint Research Seminar # 5 and Final Workshop meeting # 6 Naples, Italy organized by SUN , 21-22 April 2015 The Books of Proceedings of the research seminars have been distributed among all Partners and other concerned individuals and organisations, and are available upon request via the project web site http://www.envicop.eu/ During the project reporting period the exchange of researchers was the main tool to provide expected exchange of knowledge and experience, and perform planned project activities. The total research exchange was 89 man/months. It has involved: - secondment of 22 Early Stage Researchers (ESR): 5 from BDCA, 4 from FEUP, 3 from POLIMI, 1 from SUN, 1 from UNIVPM, 8 from UNIVALI. - secondment of 11 Experienced Researcher (ER): 3 from BDCA, 1 from POLIMI, 2 from SUN, 2 from UNIVPM, 1 from SIO, 2 UNIVALI. - besides the above mentioned, another 5 ESR and 3 ER took part in joint research seminars. Secondment of researchers has been realized in both directions from EU to Brasil and USA and vice versa: - From EU to USA: 5 ESR (total 11 m/m) and 5 ER (total 10 m/m) for a total of 21 m/m - From EU to Brazil: 10 ESR (total 28 m/m) and 6 ER (total 13 m/m) for a total of 41 m/m - From USA to EU: 1 ER (total 6 m/m) - From Brazil to EU: 8 ESR (total 19 m/m) and 2 ER (total 8 m/m) for a total of 27 m/m The EnviCOP main results could be summarise as follow: - Strengthen research partnerships between the above organizations, primarily through short period staff exchanges Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and Experienced Researchers (ER), focusing the research activities on advanced numerical and physical models tools to forecast short- and long-term phenomena with respect to coastal protection in a changing climate. - Provide improved process understanding, new knowledge, improved numerical and physical model tools, resulting in introducing new and improved environmentally friendly coastal protection structures. - Serve finally decision makers in strengthening emergency planning arrangements, improving co-ordination of coastal erosion and surface water flood risk; managing the investment of significant levels of public funding, and helping coastal communities adapt to climate change. - New research findings have been received, and reported at the Research seminars - 12 joint scientific papers have been published/submitted, others are underway (to be published in 2015-2016). The project was also acknowledged in another 14 papers, involving co-authors among the ENVICOP research team. - 6 Books of proceedings with presentations at the research seminars have been printed out and disseminated among project partners and other concerned parties.

Цел на проекта

Based on previous collaboration, a group of 3 EU research organizations (from Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria) and 2 non-EU research organizations (from USA and Brazil), experienced in the area of research on environmentally friendly (soft) coastal protection methods, decided to bring together their expertise in an IRSES network - the project EnviCOP (Environmentally Friendly Coastal Protection in a Changing Climate).EnviCOP aims at strengthening research partnerships between the above organizations, primarily through short period staff exchanges of 14 Early stage and 7 Experienced researchers, as well as through various networking activities. Research activities of the project will focus on work-out/improve/coordinate advanced tools (numerical simulation and physical models) that are able to forecast short term and long term phenomena with respect to coastal protection in a changing climate. The project is expected to provide improved process understanding, new knowledge, methods, new and improved numerical and physical model tools, resulting in introducing new and improved environmentally friendly coastal protection structures.Project objectives will be pursued by exploring the available experience and scientific potential of all partners, using complementarities and creating synergies, based on existing previous collaboration.Project output should finally serve decision makers in strengthening emergency planning arrangements, improving co-ordination of coastal erosion and surface water flood risk; managing the investment of significant levels of public funding, and helping coastal communities adapt to climate change.
