Накратко на български

Радионуклидите и специалните молекулни носители се изследват за нуждите на ядрената диагностика и терапия. Тези технологии помагат за по-точното откриване и лечение на заболявания чрез проследяване на процеси в организма.

Molecular technology for nuclear imaging and radionuclide therapy

The Trace ’n Treat Training network (Oct 2012 – Oct 2016) has fulfilled the very ambitious goal to train young researchers in the field of nuclear diagnostics and radionuclide therapy by bringing together disciplines that cover the entire health care cycle, from prevention to treatment. The research objectives of this project were: production of radionuclides with the most appropriate properties for molecular imaging and/or radionuclide therapy, their incorporation in newly designed molecular and supramolecular carriers and finally their pre-clinical evaluation and comparison. The fellows showed that multidisciplinary training and supportive network tremendously help to accomplish these goals, resulting in the in vivo evaluation of three type of carriers. Important highlights The most important highlights of the project are the two awards given to two female researchers. Alexandra Arranja received a prize for her PhD thesis ‘’Development of copolymer nano-carriers for imaging and therapy’’ from the “Association des Universités de I’Académie de Strasbourg”. Oleksandra Ivashchenko was chosen by the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging to be the recipient of the Alavi-Mandell Award for her publication entitled “Ultra-High-Sensitivity Submillimeter Mouse SPECT”. Furthermore, a paper in collaboration between MILabs, TU Delft and the CNRS became the cover of Biomaterials Science. YouTube, Wiki and Publications Other than doing multidisciplinary research, the fellows of Trace’nTreat also contributed to the education of the general public by organising outreach workshops, spreading YouTube videos and contributing to Wikipedia articles on topics related to the project. A long list of scientific publications have appeared, most of which have at least three partners of the consortium, showing that multidisciplinary research is possible when given the support of the right network Trace ‘n Treat consortium The Trace’nTreat network was a cooperation between a number of leading European institutes and industrial partners: Erasmus MC, MILabs, Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Ghent University, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – Institute Charles Sadron, IDB Holland, Urenco Nederland, Institute of Transuranium Elements and TU Delft. The Radiation Science and Technology department of the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, was responsible for the coordination of the project.

Цел на проекта

Cancer is undoubtedly becoming the second largest cause of death in the EU. Future predictions are very somber expecting worldwide 17.5 million deaths and 27 million new cases annually by 2050. New innovative research and properly educated generation of young scientists in fields related to cancer prevention, diagnostics, treatment and management is the only way to ensure progress in solving this issue. The aim of this proposal is to provide starting researchers with the skills necessary to become highly-qualified, health-associated professionals and contribute in the fight against cancer using nuclear imaging techniques and therapeutic methods. In this project the researchers will be given a broad insight in molecular imaging and radionuclide therapy with specialization in two of the following fields: Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging, soft matter, and in nuclear-, organic-, polymer- and radiopharmaceutical chemistry. The training will be provided based on a research project concerning the development of molecular and supramolecular carriers for nuclear imaging and radionuclide therapy and their pre-clinical evaluation. The fellows will be trained by a carefully selected consortium consisting of specialists and research leaders in the required fields, including the private sector. Secondments, workshops and regular meetings are included in the training to ensure the achievement of the set goal. Besides the research training, the fellows will be given the opportunity to acquire soft skills such as product development and marketing. The proposed training program will result in the development of highly-educated health-associated professionals with career prospects both in academia and industry. Additionally, through this ITN framework a long lasting collaboration will be established between the partners, ensuring both excellent research prospective and training possibilities for future fellows.
