Experienced Researcher Fellowship Programme at the "Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)"
The "École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne" (EPFL), one of the two federally funded Institutes of Technologies in Switzerland, is at the cutting edge of science and technology (http://www.epfl.ch). The School is ranked as one of Europe's top research institutions with respect to education, research and training-through-research, and offers young scientists several mobility programmes to guide them in their career development as a researcher and to enhance the sharing and transfer of knowledge between scientists and the community. "EPFL Fellows" is an incoming postdoctoral mobility programme at EPFL. lt assists the European Research Area (ERA) in gaining and promoting brains in Europe and Switzerland. The programme aims to provide state-of-the art conditions for research in a top-class academic environment, to develop scientific leadership and to position grantees for success. Fellowships can be held in any EPFL scientific discipline for a period of 24 months. 29 "EPFL Fellows" started their postdoctoral stay at EPFL between 1 February 2014 and 1 May 2017. A lay-summary of the projects of the Fellows is published on the programme's web-page (http://research-office.epfl.ch/funding/internal-non-profit/epfl-fellows-marie-curie).The programme offers the fellows a training programme ensuring an adequate balance between scientific and technological training, inter-sectorial exposure and training on transferable skills. The starting point is a self-assessment in which the "EPFL Fellow" - in consultation with her/his supervisor - identifies the expertise, skills and competences that need to be developed, both for a successful completion of the proposed research project and for later use in a scientific or professional career. This self-assessment results in a personal career plan. The following trainings and workshops were offered to the "EPFL Fellows": Ethics and social issues in research practice, Research Integrity, H2020 Funding Opportunities, Leadership and how to succeed in the scientific community, Open Science, Research Data Management Bootcamp and a Career & Networking event. After their stay at EPFL, 31% of "EPFL Fellows" received a senior academic position at EPFL or in another academic institution; 45 % enrolled in a second post-doc in the academic sector and 24% got an R&D position in the non-academic sector.

The “École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne” (EPFL) is one of the two Écoles Polytechniques Fédérales in Switzerland. The School is ranked as one of Europe’s top research institutions with respect to education, research and training-through-research, and offers young researcher several mobility programmes to encourage them to exert the researcher profession, to guide them in their career development as a researcher and to enhance the sharing and transfer of knowledge between scientists and the population of the countries.EPFL has been running these fellowship programmes for several years now and they have been shown to be very successful. At this moment, EPFL lacks a fellowship programme for incoming, experienced scientists, which could complete the doctoral and prospective researcher fellowship programmes. We will extend the current programmes with a new incoming mobility programme called EPFL Fellows, which aims to attract non Swiss resident experienced researchers from any nationality to the EPFL and/or to re-integrate national PhD (doctoral degree of a Swiss Institution) after a stay in a Third Country (of at least 3 years). These incoming fellowships intend to improve the scientific training of the experienced researchers and to assist them in establishing a research base at an important time point in their scientific careers. The fellowships may be requested in any scientific discipline within the EPFL given experienced researchers a unique opportunity to deepen their research skills within highly qualified research groups with excellent track records. The program will fund 12 fellowships of a maximum duration of 24 months each year/call. The school possess the necessary capacity and experience to assure the overall management of the programme. One call per year (1 in year 1 and 1 in year 2 ) will be published with a deadline of October 1. This new fellowship programme will enable EPFL to further develop his high quality resources, by introducing a new trans-national dimension of his offers, both in terms of incoming mobility or the return and re-integration of Swiss researchers after a stay abroad.
