Hydride-induced embrittlement in metals is a complicated phenomenon involving the coupled processes of hydrogen diffusion, hydride precipitation, non-mechanical energy flow and material deformation. The training objective of the proposed fellowship is the enhancement of the theoretical/numerical skills of the incoming researcher, who has strong experimental background in the field. The scientific objectives are: the development of a theoretical/numerical model for the simulation of hydride-induced embrittlement and sub-critical crack growth, by considering the coupling of the physical processes and material microstructure; the prediction of important quantities of hydrogen embrittlement, such as incubation period, threshold stress intensity factor and crack growth velocity, as well as their dependence on environmental, geometrical, loading and material parameters; the application of the model for the prediction of the embrittlement and fracture of zirconium alloys in fracture tests as well as for the integrity evaluation of high burn-up nuclear fuel cladding under power transients. The developments will be based on the extension of models, already developed in the host institution of the incoming phase. The theoretical predictions will be evaluated against existing experimental data as well as against experiments, which will be performed in the reintegration host organization. The theoretical/numerical tools, to be developed in the project, are also useful in investigating the embrittlement of titanium alloys of importance to aerospace industry. The present study is also expected to contribute to the research efforts related to the use of hydrogen as a main source of energy, friendly to the environment. Finally, the state of the art models/tools, to be developed in the project, will reinforce scientific excellence in European Union and enhance co-operation between EU and Indian institutions.
