Designing Future Optical Wireless Communication Networks
• Summary description of the project objectives Designing future optical wireless system solutions calls for research and development (R&D) efforts. The DETERMINE project has developed concepts, models, algorithms, and architecture for free space communications over the optical spectrum. To this end, the project followed the approach of intensive knowledge exchange and competence integration between the partners of the consortium. Optical wireless communications systems are expected on rely on a layered structure, and solution integration across layers is highly desirable. Toward this end, DETERMINE was built around combining knowledge and know-how via exchange of expertise from the physical layer, medium access, network optimization, to end applications. In addition to technological development, DETERMINE contributed to skill acquisition by training early-stage researchers. The knowledge transfer actions were built on a mutual-beneficial basis between the two European partners and the Chinese partner. DETERMINE also implemented knowledge exchange with other European efforts in the area. More precisely, the main objectives DETERMINE has accomplished: 1. Investigated physical-layer performance; this includes the experimental performance evaluation, channel modelling, and design of physical transmission layer of optical wireless communications. 2. Investigated algorithms and optimization approaches for link and network layers; this includes link-level protocol, end-to-end routing algorithms, and optimization of topology and resource allocation in a network context. 3. Designed multimedia applications; this includes adaptive coding schemes, cross-layer coding, and video transmission system design and its performance evaluation in optical wireless communication systems. • Description of the work performed since the beginning of the Project DETERMINE has been carried out the following work packages (WP); WP1 Physical layer performance, WP2 Link-layer and networking optimization, WP3 Layer-integrated multimedia applications, and WP4 Management, training, dissemination, and potential exploitation. Furthermore, DETERMINE has conducted research exchanges (between Xi'an Jiaotong University, China and Aston University, UK, as well as Xi'an Jiaotong University and Linköping University, Sweden) of experienced as well as early-stage researchers over the 4 year period. • Description of the main results achieved DETERMINE have accomplished the followings: WP1; Measurements of OWC physical layer performance & Channel modelling and characterization 1. A survey of the currently available OWC transmitter and receivers for outdoor links 2. Experimental data analysis of the selected physical OWC link systems in terms of the data rate, stability, and component impairment 3. A suitability study on beam shape types (i.e., sinusoidal-Gaussian, annular, etc.) and spectrum bands for mid-range data communications 4. Selection of physical OWC link systems in terms of the data rate, stability, and component impairment 5. A suitability study on beam shape types (i.e., sinusoidal-Gaussian, annular, etc.) 6. Characterization of weather conditions and the development of statistical models for atmospheric turbulence (refractive index), and scintillation 7. Development and evaluation of mathematically tractable OWC channel description with inputs the component type, spectral band, and weather conditions; 8. A channel modelling to capture the physical properties based on wave perturbation, taking into account the effects of fading, scattering/absorption by characterization of weather conditions 9. Development of mathematically tractable OWC channel description. WP2; Link-layer design 1. Investigation of the impact of link-layer packet design on the throughput of OWC mesh links 2. Development of an OWC link-layer-based simulation module integrating the link design with the physical channel characterizations produced by WP1 3. Investigated the effect of multi-path diversity on end-to-end application performance 4. Developed an optimization module for OWC mesh network design and topology control 5. Established an OWC link-layer-based simulation module integrating the link design with the physical channel characterizations produced by WP1. WP3; Layer-integrated multimedia applications 1. Protocol design of the video coding schemes 2. Implementation of a software package for optimal video transmission in OWC mesh networks; 3. Evaluation of video streaming and provision of guidelines of designing multimedia applications in an OWC networking setting. WP4; Development and maintenance of the project web site; ToK planning and evaluations; Dissemination planning & Workshops 1. DETERMINE project web site created and constantly updated; http://determine.itn.liu.se/index.html 2. ToK planning and evaluations done for a concise plan for the DETERMINE Transfer of Knowledge (ToK) program. 3. Demonstrated the outcomes of the DETERMINE project (https://www.ltu.se/org/srt/SNOW2017/Programme?l=en) in the workshops at the SNOW conference. 4. Active research exchanges with transferred knowledge in international research environments, thereby fulfilling the objectives of the International Research Staff Exchange Scheme. 5. A dissemination plan organized for a publication strategy and a reference methodology for potential popularization of the research outcomes.

Цел на проекта
Wireless communications via optical, unguided carriers opens up new horizons of information and communications (ICT) technologies. Up to now, radio-frequency (RF) based systems have been dominating wireless communications. The RF bands, however, have to accommodate a large variety of communication devices and modes. At the same time, there is a huge amount of unregulated bandwidth available in the upper portions of electromagnetic spectrum. In this context, wireless, unguided optical transmission systems utilizing the largely unexploited portion of the spectrum frequencies are highly promising.Designing future optical wireless system solutions calls for research and development (R&D) efforts. The DETERMINE project develops concepts, models, algorithms, and architecture for free space communication over the optical spectrum. The knowledge transfer actions are built on a mutual-beneficial basis between the two European partners and the Chinese partner. DETERMINE also implements knowledge exchange with other European efforts in the area, particularly with COST Action IC1101. For the European Research Area (ERA), the exchange actions foster human capital to simulate career development of young and talented researchers in European ICT.
