Neglected Diseases Tres Cantos Open Lab Campus
The Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation (TCOLF) is committed to helping transform the process of drug discovery for infectious diseases impacting the developing world. We believe that no single entity can succeed alone in the worldwide fight against these diseases. The Tres Cantos Open Lab Foundation was established on the principles of open innovation and collaboration to enable researchers to work in an open environment where the wider sharing of ideas and findings drives collaborative innovation. Open Lab projects explore new ideas that may lead to finding new medicines to treat, control or prevent infectious diseases impacting the developing world, especially tuberculosis, malaria, Chagas, leishmaniasis and, more recently, gut health. To be considered for support, there should be added value for the project in operating within the collaborative principles of the Open Lab. The TCOLF Cofund programme has supported 11 scientists to develop their ideas in the field and to accelerate the translation of targets, molecules or drug discovery tools into viable medicines, accessing GSK drug discovery expertise and working during all or part of their fellowship at its research facilities in Spain. Since March 2013, we invited interested researchers to submit applications to seven Cofund calls, subject to the published eligibility criteria. We received 52 proposals in response to such calls. Eligible proposals were evaluated by the TCOLF Governing Board members and 13 of them were selected for funding (2 fellows rejected their fellowship after the award). Our funding and support will enable researchers to work in an open environment where the wider sharing of ideas and findings will drive collaborative innovation. OpenLabCampus Cofund Program targets the selection of 19 Experienced Researchers in 5 years. Calls for proposals will be continuously open; every six months the received proposals will be evaluated and selected. Information concerning the selection timetables and procedures will be available at the Project website from the programme start and updated regularly. Candidates must obtain signed declarations of Interest by two host institutions: GSK's Diseases for Developing World (GSK-DDW) centre in Tres Cantos (Madrid, Spain) as Host Institution and a High Education Institution, Research Institution or Private Company in the Neglected Diseases Research field as Home (sending) Institution.Scientists funded by the OpenLabCampus Program will access the resources and facilities of the GlaxoSmithKline Tres Cantos Medicines Development Campus in Spain and work alongside its scientists. This programme aims to explore and test innovative open innovation and data sharing approaches which could have a later major impact in the field of Neglected Diseases and potentially provide a model for future pharmaceutical collaborative R&D worldwide.
