Накратко на български

Нови силициеви съединения се разработват, за да помогнат на по-достъпни метали като желязо и кобалт да действат като ефективни катализатори. Това е важно, за да се заменят скъпите и токсични благородни метали, използвани в химическата индустрия.

New Anionic Ligands for Base Metal Catalysis

A large fraction of the homogeneous catalysts used in the chemical industry contain precious metals, which are in general both expensive and toxic. It would be desirable to replace these expensive metals with more abundant ones such as iron or cobalt. To this end, new ligands need to be discovered that tune the chemical properties of these metals and thus makes them efficient catalysts. The SilaCoFeCC project is concerned with the development of new silicon-based ligands in view of applications in first-row transition-metal catalysis. During the project period, a series of new silicon compounds incorporating N-pyrrolyl substituents have been synthesized. In particular, hydrogen atoms bound to silicon have been shown to migrate to a carbon atom in compounds incorporating 2-(aryliminomethyl)pyrrolyl substituents. This reaction has been investigated in details, and the new compounds generated this way may serve as precursors to useful ligands.

Цел на проекта

The development of catalysts based on cheap and non-toxic first-row transition metals in replacement of the traditional precious metals is broadly recognized as a key challenge for the development of environmentally friendly chemistry. Here, we propose the development of novel silicon-based ligands specifically tailored to support organometallic chemistry at first-row transition metals (Fe and Co) and their application to the mechanistic study and development of C-C bond forming reactions. The applicant has received his undergraduate (EPFL) and graduate (ETHZ) education in Switzerland and then spent 2.5 years as a researcher at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech); he is now returning to Europe to start building up an independent research and teaching career at Utrecht University. The knowledge obtained in this research project will be shared with young European scientists through teaching and mentoring.
