Talents Up for an International House

After the good achievements of the Fellowship Programme TALENTS, AREA Consortium of Trieste realized the second edition of the Programme, entitled “TALENTS UP for an International House”, with the financial contribution of the European Commission and of the Regional Authority of Friuli Venezia Giulia. TALENTS UP Fellowship Programme is the second step of the long-term strategy pursued by AREA Consortium of Trieste and aimed at obtaining a good socio-economic impact in the long term, in terms of enhancing the competitiveness of the scientific regional system and the internationalization of the human capital engaged in research activities in the regional scientific centres. The general objectives of the Project were: - To offer grants and support to mobile experienced researchers working in the regional scientific centres; - to implement career opportunities for mobile researchers , to encourage incoming mobility together with brain circulation, to enhance the attractiveness of the region Friuli Venezia Giulia; - to promote research results and knowledge potentials, to strengthen the links between scientific institutes and the industrial sectors of both foreign countries and our region; - with regards to the wider societal implication of the Project, in line with the “Intelligent Growth” priority principles of Europe 2020, to contribute to the development of a society based on Knowledge and Innovation and therefore to create opportunities of access to European funds for Research and Innovation; In the frame of these general objectives, TALENTS UP Fellowship Programme assigned 7 incoming mobility fellowships to experienced researchers willing to develop a 12-month-research and training project in collaboration with the Friuli Venezia Giulia scientific institutions member of the Coordination Network (CER – www.area.trieste.it/coordinamento) and with other foreign scientific organisations. The Project endorsed a bottom-up approach, so that researchers were free to choose both the research topic and the scientific institution, within one of five scientific areas; moreover, the Fellowship Programme was also open to accept applications involving a partner from the private sector, and therefore supported intersectoral mobility as well. One call for proposals was published in order to assign the fellowships. After the call deadline, eligible proposals were evaluated by panels of experts (one panel of three experts for each scientific area) and the procedures were very much similar to the ones adopted at a European level to assign Marie Curie Fellowships. TALENTS UP Programme benefitted from the financial contribution of the Regional Authority of Friuli Venezia Giulia and had a successful follow-up, because, thanks to its good visibility and success, it led the Regional Managing Authority to publish a call dedicated to the realization of a new Fellowship Programme through the European Social Fund. AREA Consortium of Trieste applied for the funds and realised the third Fellowship Programme named “TALENTS FVG”.
