Marshall Fellowships

This fellowships scheme (aka BEWARE Industry) offered, over a five-year period, a total of 31 18-to-36-months fellowships to highly skilled researchers to perform a research stay in a Walloon R&D Institute. Eligible researchers were from all nationalities and had 4 years of research experience or held a PhD. They had to comply with the following mobility rule: having spent less than 12 month out of the last 36 months in Belgium at the time of submission (international mobility rules according to the European Commission). Researchers were invited to apply jointly with a promoter (scientist in charge) from one of the following eligible potential hosts. A facilitator was able to ensure the best possible matching between the researcher and the potential host among 22 Accredited Research Centres ("Centre de recherche agréé") (see below) and more than 200 R&D intensive SMEs. Eligible research fields were those covered by the so-called "Marshall Plan 2.green". They reflected the priority areas identified by the Walloon Government: • transport and logistics • mechanical engineering • life sciences • agro industry • aeronautics and space • environmental technologies The project ran on a 5 years period, allowing 9 calls for proposals depending on available budget (we planned 6 but launched 9: 2 in 2014, 4 in 2045 and 3 in 2016 mainly to reach the number of expected fellows, as indicated below). Call 1 (2013) : opening : 15/12/2013 / closing : 31/3/2014 Call 2 (2014) : opening : 30/6/2014 / closing : 15/10/2014 Calls 3 - 6 (2015) : opening : 18/2/2015 / closing : 30/4/2015 + 30/6/2015 + 30/9/2015 + 30/11/2015 Calls 7 - 9 (2016) : opening : 28/1/2016 / closing : 1/4/2016 + 1/9/2016 + 4/11/2016 The ARCs are : • CEBEDEAU - Centre of expertise for water treatment and management (located in Liège) • CELABOR - Wool and chemicals research and testing centre (Herve) • CENAERO - Centre of excellence for aeronautics research (Gosselies) • CENTEXBEL - Belgian textile research centre (Herve) • CER - Rural economy centre (Marloie) • CERTECH - Chemical technologies resource centre (Seneffe) • CETIC - Centre of excellence for information and communication technology (Gosselies) • CEWAC - Walloon research centre for the study of assembly and material testing (Ougrée) (now integrated to SIRRIS and CRM) • CoRI - Coatings, paints and inks research institute (Limelette) (now integrated to Materia Nova) • CRIBC - Belgian ceramic research centre (Mons) • CRIC - Cement industry research centre (Brussels) • CRM - Metallic materials research centre (Ougrée) • CRR - Road research centre (Wavre) • CSTC - Construction technology and scientific research centre (Limelette) • CTIB - Belgian institute for wood technology (Brussels) • CTP - International earth and stone technology centre (Tournai) • IBS - Belgian welding institute (Brussels) • ImmuneHealth – Biotechnologies (Gosselies) • INISMa - National inter-university institute for silicates, soils and materials (Mons) • Materia Nova - Materials excellence cluster (Mons) • Multitel - Research centre in telecommunications, signal and image processing (Mons) • SIRRIS - Collective centre for the technological industry (Ougrée) Objectives of the programme were: • offering to mobile researchers a high level research stay in a dynamic R&D unit • enhancing transnational collaborations and mobility • identifying research results that have a potential economic impact Note that, in December 2018, E&Y audited the programme and concluded that "the financial management of the project was carried out in an acceptable manner in compliance with the requirements of the grant management".
