a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities - European Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne

With a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities, the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanties Cologne has established a pioneering doctoral programme designed specifically around the needs of individual Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in the Humanities. Since 2017, the programme has recruited 30 young scholars (10 per year in 3 calls) for a duration of 36 months to undergo an excellent research training in the Humanities. By offering a distinct international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral environment, the research conducted by the fellows of a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities facilitates a broadened and considerate understanding of societal processes and practices and the underlying historical contexts enabling the fellows to be aware of their pivotal role in shaping the future of Europe. Located at the University of Cologne, a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities has been integrated into an ideal institutional infrastructure and has offered a doctoral training programme with stable working conditions and a career orientated approach with regard to the “triple-i” dimension intending interdisciplinary and international orientation as well as intersectoral outreach of each ESR’s individual research and career development: - a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities was based on a structured but flexible bottom-up approach bringing together a wide range of disciplines for the entire Humanities and offering each ESR manifold opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary exchange and supervision tailored to the needs of the individual research project. - Best supervision and early network building have been guaranteed by compulsory international mobility phases: each ESR had to choose one out of two mobility options intending either an at least 18-months research period out of Europe (a.r.t.e.s. global) or a 12-months mobility phase at up to two research institutions inside Europe (a.r.t.e.s. EU). - Moreover, the programme invented an intersectoral and public engagement strategy encouraging each ESR to initiate cooperation with non-academic institutions and actors to improve career opportunities beyond academia and to make the research results available to non-academic audiences aiming at a stronger commitment of the Humanities in public discourse. Established as part of the institutional structure of the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne, a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities has complemented an interdisciplinary research environment that is integrating a wide variety of disciplines at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Through the implementation of the whole range of MSCA standards, a.r.t.e.s. EUmanities could initiate a sustainable impact on the whole institutional structure transforming a.r.t.e.s. into a sustainable and pioneering graduate programme for the Humanities.

artes EUmanities offers a doctoral programme (DP) with a mandatory mobility phase, as part of the established artes Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne (AGSHC). Designed around the needs of each individual Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in the Humanities, it will provide places for up to 10 ESRs every year for 3 years.EUmanities relies on a structured but flexible bottom-up approach, providing an interdisciplinary DP for the entire Humanities that supports ESRs to design their own individual research and career development. Thanks to a wide-spread network of regional, European and global networks of excellent research, academic and intersectoral partner organisations, they will learn to work discerningly and decisively, think and engage beyond disciplinary, national and sectoral boundaries.artes EUmanities will be implemented in accordance with the targets of the Horizon 2020 objectives regarding excellent research, stable working conditions and the implementation of the triple “i” dimension through:1) two international mobility options (a global outgoing phase of 18 months – artes global, or an inner-European outgoing phase of at least 12 months - artes EU);2) extensive guidance by an interdisciplinary and international team of 3 supervisors and within multidisciplinary Graduate Classes;3) support for a prompt transition into subsequent career stages thanks to the career development programme and a close cooperation with various intersectoral partners.artes EUmanities will guarantee a sustainable impact on the whole institutional structure of the ASGHC, transforming it into an excellent European graduate school with a strong international outreach and a distinctive interdisciplinary approach. It will offer Europe a leading model for innovative DPs and research training that will empower ESRs in the Humanities to become aware of their own potential in mediating sensitive and complex issues to make them accessible to different addressees.
