International, Interdisciplinary and Intersectoral Postdocs

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland’s largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences, excels in world-class research on condensed matter, materials sciences, energy, environment and health. It is particularly renowned for its high-class, large-scale infrastructures with photon, neutron, muon and proton sources at one site. This attractive research environment and the broad international network with academia and industry attracts top-class researchers from all over the world to per¬form their research activities at PSI as PhDs, postdoctoral fellows, or senior scientists. From 2017-2021 the 60 months MSCA PSI-Fellow postdoctoral programme at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, see figure) was open to candidates from all over the world and was intended for experienced researchers after their PhD study to further their scientific training in the four broad areas of expertise at the PSI. In brief, the programme strived for transparency in the selection process, merit-based evaluation of applicants by a reviewing panel of internal and international experts and client-friendliness towards applicant researchers. The overall objective of the programme was to boost the fellows’ careers by: - Providing an interdisciplinary research environment - Access to a unique combination of complex large-scale research facilities, leading to world-class research and high impact publications - Broad training opportunities in transferable skills and career development support through individual mentoring schemes - Access to a strong inter-sectoral and academic network - Access to a very inspiring international environment with staff from more than 60 nations This programme has trained the next generation of researchers who are specialised in harnessing the full potential of large-scale research facilities and stimulating innovation in European industry through forward-looking research and cutting-edge technology that is uniquely available at PSI. The free choice of research topics within the existing wide range of research themes of PSI has fostered new ideas and facilitated innovation.

Цел на проекта

Large-scale research facilities are enabling cutting edge research and innovation in important domains such as materials science, health and energy. A number of such accelerator facilities is currently under construction in Europe and will become operational within the next ten years. Thus, there is a growing need for highly qualified researchers trained in interdisciplinary research at such facilities and also an increasing demand from companies to use these facilities for developing and testing innovative products.The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), one of Europe’s leading research centres and particularly renowned for its accelerator facilities and long-standing industry collaborations, intends to establish a novel post-doctoral research programme with new interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral training elements.PSI features a unique combination of excellent research facilities, including neutron, muon and light sources and (as of 2016) an X-ray free electron laser, which all exceed the possibilities of universities or industrial research centres. Motivated by the successful implementation of the FP7 COFUND programme PSI-FELLOW, PSI now wants to take post-doctoral education to the next level and proposes to set up PSI-FELLOW-II-3I. This 5-year programme will offer a total of 60 fellowships of two years duration each. The fellowships will be awarded in two calls for proposals with 30 fellowships in each call. In order to maximise the benefit for the fellows and offer the widest possible range of research topics, PSI has teamed up with 16 partner organisations (9 research institutions and 7 companies). The unique setup of PSI-FELLOW-II-3i will allow using synergies with other leading research institutions for the training of the next generation of researchers specialised in tapping the full potential of large-scale research facilities, to transfer knowledge and stimulate innovation in Europe’s industries.
