SOLUTION - Solid lubrication for emerging engineering applications

The SOLUTION project focused on researching novel solid lubricant coatings for emerging engineering applications. The main goal was to understand the mechanisms of nanoscale friction to control the sliding at the atomic level and design new low-dimensional and bulk materials with extremely low coefficient of friction. The key aim of Solution project was to train a new generation of researchers to tackle multidisciplinary problem represented by a need to reduce energy losses by friction. ESRs combined atomistic simulations and advanced frictional theories with newly developed nanoscale testing to predict frictional behavior of selected solid lubricants. These lubricants were then deposited by various techniques and thoroughly tested, first in laboratory conditions, and finally in industrial test benches.

SOLUTION will provide research and training program for 14 early stage researchers (ESR) pursuing their PhD in variousdisciplines covering the broadly defined area of solid lubricant coatings. The project combines theoretical approachesrepresented by advanced nanoscale simulations, laboratory design and fabrication of novel solid lubricants supported bysimulations, and the up-scaling of promising solutions and their application in selected emerging engineering applications.SOLUTION will link industries from various areas dealing with similar issues through intensive training and knowledgesharing. Three topics driven by industrial partners have been selected to demonstrate the added value of simultaneousdevelopment and training. The use of modern solid lubricants underlines the transformation of industry towards smartdesign, which is based on predictive models and cross-communication throughout the entire production chain.Fellows supported by the project will have a unique opportunity to gain competence ranging from simulation, characterizationand processing, to industrial processes and entrepreneurship. Highly individualized multidisciplinary training reflecting actualmarket needs, together with scientific excellence, will generate an open-mind generation able to harvest multidisciplinaryknowledge and to successfully face challenges represented by the design of competitive solid lubricants.
