Explaining Global India: a multi-sectoral PhD training programme analysing the emergence of India as a global actor

This project is providing 15 ESRs with a set of skills and capacities that will have both short term and long-term benefits on their future employability. The aim of the network is not only to produce first-class scholars but also to train professionals who are adaptable, have strong problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills. They now understand that real-world problems can be most effectively analysed through the inclusion of multiple perspectives and that policy development and the strategic engagement between actors requires effective and appropriate dissemination of new information and theoretical perspectives. The ESRs have undertaken their fieldwork and secondments, while in the first months of their PhDs started to learn skills necessary for their future. ESRs have attended several workshops, internal and external to their home institutions. Overall, the expected impacts are a strong international network, the training of 15 PhDs who are specialists but with an interdisciplinary and intersectoral focus, while developing initiative, entrepreneurial skills and independence of ESRs – to compete in markets other than the academic one. It will give them a new experience of India and see how India works externally with the EU (for example). It is creating an individual path for research and training allowing ESR to move among partners, sectors, disciplines; enabling them to understand, develop and exploit their skills, expectations and capacities. The Network activities will involve engagement between various institutions and researchers. ESRs will think in the end in broader terms than most PhD students. The interaction at all levels between sectors and partners and it will lead to the creation of new synergies and collaborations between sectors. ESRs and their supervisors will gain an Indian perspective on the research themes, with joint efforts and collaborations between EU and Indian universities, increase even after the end of the project. ESRs will gain a real multidisciplinary perspective. For example, rather than focusing on extreme-right parties, one Fellow is including all parties-participation to electoral processes in order to see the impact of gender in those.

The GLOBAL INDIA ETN will deliver a world-class multi-sectoral doctoral training programme focused on India’s emergence as a global and regional power, and its relationship with the EU. International research on India’s global role has not kept pace with the changes to India’s status as a growing economy and significant international actor. This is reflected in the lack of PhD level training programmes in Europe that have a focus on India. Europe lacks a knowledge base on India, the ETN addresses this by creating a multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral network bringing together six leading European universities, with six leading Indian universities, and six non-university partners (one as a beneficiary), all of whom have previously collaborated together. India's actions as a global actor impact on the interests of the EU, and India as a democratic state could potentially be an ally for the EU on international issues that will affect the welfare and security of Europe. The quality of Indian democracy also shapes India’s actions as an international actor and therefore this programme examines the domestic challenges that are shaping Indian democracy and the key international actions of India that are most relevant to its relationship with Europe. The networks training programme is grounded in the academic excellence of the universities and the complimentarily of the strong, diverse range of non-academic partners – a representative business organisation, a consultancy SME; two think-tanks (in Brussels and New Delhi); a human rights organisation and a global company. The training programme requires that all ESRs will attend 9 network training events, providing workshops on skills (academic and practitioner), with inputs from all partners; complete an internship with a non-academic partner; and conduct extended period of field-work based in an Indian University. Key measurable outputs of the network will be 30 journal articles, 60 policy briefs and an active media presence.
