Накратко на български

Статистическите методи и машинното обучение се разработват за анализ на данни, например при търсене на нови частици в Големия адронен колайдер. Те помагат за по-точното разбиране на фундаменталните частици в природата и подобряват научните изследвания в различни области.

International Training Network for Statistics in High Energy Physics and Society

The INSIGHTS Innovative Training Network (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017, Grant Agreement n. 765710) made numerous important contributions to the development of advanced statistical methods, their implementation in software, and application to the solution of problems in Particle Physics and other fields. In doing so, we have created a cohort of experts not only able to investigate Nature's fundamental particles but also to solve problems of broad relevance to society. INSIGHTS enabled significant further progress with particular emphasis on Machine Learning, parametric modelling and Bayesian computation. We have ensured that the statistical tools can cope with the complexities of real experimental settings by using them in actual analyses, such as searches and studies of new fundamental particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Statistical data analysis is a central tool in all types of scientific research, especially in High Energy Physics (HEP). To carry out an HEP analysis capable of discovering new phenomena one needs multivariate methods that exploit recent innovations from Machine Learning together with accurate parametric models and advanced computational methods. Tremendous progress has been made in the development and application of novel statistical methods in HEP in recent years, and these have proved decisive in many important discoveries. The aim of INSIGHTS has been to extend this progress and thus substantially increase the potential of facilities like the LHC to achieve their scientific goals. The development and application of modern statistical methods cannot be decoupled from software tools. Through training events and secondments with industrial partners, INSIGHTS provided training in modern software engineering practice. Much of the resulting software has made publicly available and as a result is of high value to HEP and other research and industrial fields.

Цел на проекта

The INSIGHTS Innovative Training Network will develop advanced statistical methods, implement them in software, and apply them to solve problems in Particle Physics and other fields. In doing so, we will create the next generation of experts not only able to investigate Nature's fundamental particles but also to solve problems of broad relevance to society. The analysis of data collected in Particle Physics experiments such as those at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) poses tremendous challenges, and advanced statistical methods have proven to be key elements of recent advances in the field. INSIGHTS will enable significant further progress with particular emphasis on multivariate analysis, parametric modelling and Bayesian computation. We will ensure that the statistical tools can cope with the complexities of real experimental settings by using them in actual analyses, such as searches for new fundamental particles at the LHC. In carrying out the proposed research, INSIGHTS will train a cohort of physicists in modern statistical methods and establish collaborations and educational structures that will continue long into the future. In particular we plan to establish a new Pan-European Advanced School of Statistics, which will take the training of EU researchers to a higher level. The participating institutes in INSIGHTS have a successful track record of and innovation and education in statistical data analysis, and their expertise will form the core of the training provided. In addition, secondments with partners in other disciplines such as Finance, Climate Science and Volcanology will allow participants to view statistical and computational problems from multiple viewpoints and to exchange ideas between these areas and Particle Physics.
