Накратко на български
Зооархеологията на нурагическата култура в Сардиния анализира останки от животни, за да разбере какви видове са отглеждали хората преди хиляди години. Това помага да се разберат социалните неравенства, икономиката и начините на адаптация към промените в климата.

Zooarchaeology of the Nuragic Bronze Age
The archaeology of the Nuragic Culture, a Bronze Age culture that developed on the island of Sardinia between c. 1700-900 BCE, has been understudied in comparison with other cultures of the Mediterranean Bronze Age. However, as a culture with a trajectory that differs significantly from the cultures of the East Mediterranean, the Nuragic Culture offers important alternative understandings of developing social inequality, adaptations to climate change, and responses to political and social unrest. The project ZANBA – ZooArchaeology of the Nuragic Bronze Age – was conducted to address the gap in research by applying cutting-edge archaeological science to expand our understanding of these issues in the Nuragic Culture. Zooarchaeology – the study of animal remains in archaeological contexts – can be used to understand decision making in ancient societies. Animal economies reflect human strategies like maximizing production and conserving water. By understanding the animals Nuragic people chose to raise and how and where they raised them, ZANBA is uncovering the social, economic, and environmental responses of Nuragic communities as they encountered political expansion, the development of social elites, and changes in environment and precipitation. To date, ZANBA has completed the first step of the research that will allow evaluation of animal mobility patterns in the Nuragic Culture. The research of ZANBA is ongoing.

Цел на проекта
ZANBA will combine cutting-edge, multi-scalar isotope analyses with morphological analysis of zooarchaeological remains tounderstand the relationships among developing elite identities, landscape use, and power consolidation in the NuragicCulture of Bronze Age Sardinia (c. 1700-1100 BCE). Assemblages of archaeofauanas from two sites that represent the fulldevelopment of the Nuragic Culture will be analysed for evidence of feasting, hunting, collection of tribute, intensification ofthe animal economy, and other behaviours that are used by incipient elites to promote an elite group identity and consolidatepower. Specimens from these archaeofaunas representing raised, managed, and hunted animal species will then beanalysed using multiple isotopes for evidence of economic intensification and expanding territorial control. The combinedresults of both studies will be used to construct a new narrative of internal social development within the Nuragic Culture.Such a multi-disciplinary study is unique in Nuragic Sardinia, where isotope studies have never been applied toarchaeofaunas and where morphological studies have often addressed the animal economy of the Nuragic Culture as aundifferentiated whole with few attempts to understand its internal social dynamics during the Culture's 600-yeardevelopment. The detailed study and reassessment of Nuragic social dynamics provided by ZANBA is necessary and timelyas new archaeological discoveries are indicating that the Nuragic Culture played a larger role in European Bronze Ageexchange networks than has previously been recognized.
