Накратко на български
Роеви роботизирани системи се изследват за съвместно изграждане на структури, например чрез поставяне на строителни блокове според определени правила. Това е важно, за да се създават бързо аварийни подслони при природни бедствия, което може да спаси човешки животи.

A Swarm Robotics Construction System
Swarm robotics systems have many potential applications, especially in hostile and unstructured environments where flexibility and redundancy are required to successfully perform a task. Examples of such tasks and environments could include containing a flooding river or building emergency shelter following a landslide or an earthquake. The ability to deploy such swarm robotics systems in these scenarios would likely save many human lives. Research in swarm robotics, however, has for some time been limited to relatively simple robots whose collective task is to form and to maintain some level of spatial organisation with respect to a task and an environment. While understanding how to perform these spatial-organisational tasks is a fundamental step in this area of research, I believe that we need to push these boundaries and start investigating how swarms of robots can work together to modify their environment. As a first step, I studied in this project how swarms of robots could cooperate to build simple structures using the BuilderBot robot and the Stigmergic Block. In particular, we wanted to study how target structures could be decomposed into sets of construction rules that can be executed by a swarm of robots. During an experiment, these construction rules would be applied by the individual robots with respect to the current state of the environment including any partially-built structures. Construction rules such as adding building material can then be applied to an incomplete structure, advancing it towards completion.

Цел на проекта
This proposal details an investigation into the development of control software for swarms of robots tasked with building structures. The behavior of the individual robots in this work will be fully autonomous and will be based on the nest building behavior of social insects. It is of interest to investigate whether the building behavior of social insects can be transferred to and implemented in a swarm of robots since the social insect behavior has been shown to be parallel, robust, and scalable.I outline in this proposal the second milestone of my ambitious research project that I have devised to investigate how swarm robotics can be applied to construction. I completed the first milestone of this research project during my doctoral studies, where I implemented and validated a swarm robotics construction system using both hardware and simulation.I have organized the second milestone of my research project into four work packages. In these work packages, I will develop, implement, and validate control software for a swarm of robots, which must perform a construction task. These work packages use a combination of the simulation and hardware tools that I developed during my doctoral studies to efficiently and accurately answer a number of open research questions. I have designed these work packages to be completed at IRIDIA where I have access to world-class facilities such as a computer cluster with more than 1000 CPUs for running simulations and a state-of-the-art arena and tracking setup for running hardware experiments.I believe that by undertaking the second milestone of this project at IRIDIA under the supervision of Prof. Marco Dorigo, I will be able to successfully establish myself as an independent researcher.
