INnovative Network for Training in ToUch InteracTIVE Interfaces

INTUITIVE was an innovative training network for early stage researchers in the multidisciplinary fields of haptics, haptics technology, neurotechnology, human robotics, robotics, flexible electronics and nanotechnology. The aims were (1) to understand haptics processing within the human brain, paving the ground for designing better user haptics interfaces to be applied in virtual reality and remote operation; (2) to understand how skin biomechanics impact the neural signals generated in a user-interface interaction, again to pave the ground for design; (3) Develop biomimetic signal processing based on tactile primitives and investigate computational functions in typical haptic recognition tasks; (4) Develop biomimetic tactile skin for tomorrow’s touch/haptic and assistive technology; (5) Demonstrate new strategies for robotic haptic manipulation and tactile displays for blind. INTUITIVE also had as a main objective to ensure quick transition of innovation to industry by directly involving key industrial partners, thus leverage the strength of the EU in strategic fields of haptics, flexible electronics and human robotics. To reach these aims INTUITIVE were composed of academic and industrial partners with a strong competence in relevant subfields. Through a strong recruitment strategy bolstered by the wide networks of individual principal investigators of the partners, INTUITIVE have managed to recruit a strong set of ESRs, inspired to take on the challenges set out by the objectives of the project. In order to foster innovative and independent researchers, INTUITIVE had a strong focus on soft complementary skills such as the process from bringing a lab innovation into a patent, how to pitch a research finding efficiently and other aspects of conducting research and development.

INTUITIVE will train a generation of early stage researcher (ESR) in ground breaking scientific and technologicalapproaches in haptics. They will develop novel soft biomorphic tactile skin based on flexible electronics, miniaturized softsensors, and a powerful new understanding of tactile information processing in humans - intrinsically shaped through theinteraction with the environment, and aimed to advance robotics and assistive technology. The technological novelties of thisproject include touch sensor using materials such as graphene and new functionalities such as memory device in skin fordeeper understanding of skin biomechanics through artificial means. Neuroscience investigations and computationalmodelling using predictive coding will explain how variable modes of interactions still lead to a stable representation of theobjects we interact with, and how robots could use these principles to acquire knowledge of their haptic environment. Thiswill also help developing intuitive and efficient haptic displays as an aid for the blind and prosthetics. Through participation inthis ITN and targeted courses, the ESR will acquire complementary expertise of neuroscience, haptics, flexible electronics,microsensors, robotics and rehabilitation technology. This programme, proposed by 13 key academic, research institutesand industry, will deliver 540 person-months of unparalleled multidisciplinary research training to 15 ESRs. The ESR will bementored by INTUITIVE PIs, who are pioneers in the neuroscience or/and technology of haptics and its applications. Theywill have access to state-of-the-art equipment including unique devices designed by the PIs. Hands-on project training will besupplemented with formal training courses in relevant fields and a variety of courses such as IPR, grant writing andexploiting the scientific results. Mobility within the network targeted to each ESR will ensure exposure to both academic andindustrial environments.
