GridEye agent-based distributed control for Home Energy Management System

The overall objectives of the project were as follows. a) proposing a distributed control approach for home energy management (HEM) in which each user is an agent that can manage the pattern of its electricity consumption by optimal household appliance scheduling (HAS) besides making decisions on its own available distributed generations (DGs), locally, with no need to know any data on other users in advance. The GEHEMS’s objectives were complemented by consideration of the benefits for all of the involved players, such as end-customers and electric utilities (including distribution system operators (DSOs), community system operators (CSOs), and smart grid technology vendor companies (SGTVCs)); and b) to enhance the skills and career opportunities of the experienced researcher (ER). Both of the objectives have been achieved successfully. The project developed a grid-aware home energy management system (HEMS) by introducing a novel four-level architecture. The proposed architecture is based on the grid monitoring data and contribution of end-customers' controllable resources and appliances which allows grid operators to operate the grid safely and motivates end-customers for effective participation in active distribution networks (ADNs). Accurate and synchronized grid monitoring data was provided by real installations of the host’s GridEye devices. Furthermore, intensive career development activities and two-way transfer of knowledge have opened many doors of opportunities as the next professional step for the ER. The success of these objectives is evidenced by publications on the topic and the ER securing a senior engineer position in an electricity utility. The project has met the deliverables including the Data Management Plan, Ethics requirements (Protection of Personal Data and Non-European Country) within their deadlines as part of Continuous reporting; and all the technical milestones. The algorithms have enormous scientific value regarding the importance of grid monitoring and control, which have been demonstrated in the project. The results have significant potential to be exploited through i) implementation on the GridEye platform as an application module and ii) commercialization as a product.

Цел на проекта

GridEye agent-based distributed control for Home Energy Management System (GEHEMS) explores the theme of energy management for smart homes in the complementary environments of electrical distribution systems (EDSs) and smart grids (SGs). The EU priority of increasing the penetration of renewable energy resources (RERs) in power systems has led to the wide acceptance of the SG paradigm as the solution for several emerging challenges. Despite the significant investments in SGs and EDSs, the two fronts are evolving quite independently from each other. A relevant drawback returns to the role of endcustomers in the EDSs that should be changed from a passive consumer to an active market player. GEHEMS tackles this gap by proposing a two-level control approach in which each user is an agent that can manage its electricity consumption besides making decisions on its own available RERs and energy storage devices. GEHEMS is composed of: i) a low-level control model which makes the appliance start as soon as needed when its timing constraints are satisfied besides making the appliance activate at low-cost time intervals; and ii) a high-level control model which is based on an optimization problem at the end of each day that will be used to drive the activation decision of appliances for the next day. GridEye is a monitoring and control platform in EDSs developed by the host organization will be used for implementation of the proposed control and interaction with smart homes. GEHEMS’s quality and industry-driven nature is assured by the experience and complementary expertise of the candidate and host, and is further enhanced by the participation of experienced experts in the fields of power systems, computer science, communication, and control/automation engineering. Besides advancing in the multidisciplinary fields, GEHEMS is expected to impact the EU power sector, industry and society as a whole, by contributing to the effective integration of SGs in EDSs.
