European Doctoral programme on ENergy and Environment

Energy and the Environment are two subjects linked to the two major European societal challenges, namely societal challenges N°3 “Safe, clean and efficient energy” and N°5 “Action for the climate, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials”. In this context, the European doctoral programme in Energy and Environment EDENE is an ambitious multidisciplinary, intersectoral and international project over a period of 5 years offering quality training to a total of 30 international and highly-qualified doctoral students in these fields. Its ambition is to develop a working dynamic around innovative subjects on these topics in all disciplines covered by the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (UPPA). Based on the obtention in 2017 of the competitive I-Site Label (Science / Innovation / Territories / Economy Initiative by the French Programme ‘Investissements d'Avenir’) for its project Energy & Environment Solutions (E2S) and renewed in 2022, the UPPA's priorities are indeed to attract new talents, to develop international collaborations with targeted universities and to develop the international training offer, mainly in the fields of energy and the environment. This collaborative project also aims to strengthen links with local socio-economic players and cross-border university players, namely the University of Zaragoza, Enedis, Naldeo, Terega, TotalEnergies, the Avenia competitive cluster and the SATT Aquitaine Sciences Transfert. EDENE aims to respond to these two major European societal challenges by enabling promising early-career researchers to carry out excellent research applied to the fields of energy and the environment in mathematics, engineering, geosciences, aquatic environments, computer science, land-use planning or physical chemistry...Through the 3 calls for projects, EDENE enables 30 excellent international researchers to develop their talent beyond the Master's level, via a project of their choice, while being integrated into the best teams at UPPA and potential partners, so that they can develop fruitful cooperation in terms of research, excellence and career development.

The European Doctoral Programme in Energy and Environment (EDENE) is a multidisciplinary, intersectoral and international ambitious project over a 5 years duration offering a quality training to 30 international and highly skilled PhD Fellows in the field of Energy and Environment.Since the University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) obtained in 2017 the excellent label I-site (competitive Initiative Science/Innovation/Territories/Economy by the French Programme Investments for the Future) for its project Energy & Environment Solutions (E2S), UPPA’s priority is to develop international collaborations with targeted universities, to attract new talents, and to develop the international courses offer, mainly in Energy and Environment areas. Using its comparative plus points in terms of location (Pyrenean cross-border France/Spain region), UPPA developed cross-border collaborations and sound partnerships with international companies located in the south west region of France. EDENE was born from these collaborations and gathers leading expertise from a strong consortium: two universities (UPPA, University of Zaragoza), international companies (TOTAL, Enedis, Bertin, Teréga) competitive clusters (POLE AVENIA) and Technology Transfer Office (Aquitaine Science Transfert - AST).EDENE intends to address two major European Societal Challenges SC3 “Secure, clean and efficient energy” and SC5 “Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials”, by enabling promising Early Stage Researchers to achieve excellent research applied to energy and environment areas in mathematics, engineering, geosciences, aquatic environments, computer sciences, land development, treatment of economic data, or physical-chemistry.
