A Performance History of Morris Dancing: Music and Musicians, 1550-1700

This project has developed new methods of historiography for early modern folk performance traditions. The focus has been on morris dancing in public settings from the period 1550-1700. The researcher has traced the development of musical form and style for morris dancing during its most prolific years of practice and societal engagement. The researcher has also compiled a body of early modern tunes that were highly circulated and usable for morris dancing in a range of contexts, including dances in a procession and dances in a round. Other recent studies of morris dancing have been limited by their focus on analysing the proliferation and number of public records across regions of the British Isles rather than on performance. This project addresses this problem in close readings of sources to draw conclusions about how morris music developed over time. This research has proven vital to the preservation of historical European dance culture and its associated music. This research is important to society in providing new insights into the music for dance form that is growing in popularity around the UK and Ireland. There have also been new connections made between English and French texts which highlight the relationship between their musical styles when it comes to historical folk dance and musical instrumentation. The project addressed the following objectives: 1. To identify a body of tunes used for Morris dancing in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. 2. To understand the role that musicians played in developing the musical style and level of participation in the Morris dance during the seventeenth century. 3. To examine literary sources which describe the music of Morris dancing in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to identify a performance style. 4. To examine connections between the current practice of Morris dancing and the earliest musical sources by collaborating with contemporary Morris dancing groups in the dissemination of the research and exploring a lineage to the current repertoire.

Morris dancing is a historical dance form which has been practiced in an almost uninterrupted tradition since c.1458 in the British Isles and on the European continent. This origin date for the English tradition has been traced in royal court records by historian John Forrest, who describes Morris dancing as being deeply connected to public celebration in early modern England. Forrest presents an extensive picture of historical references to Morris dancing as it survives in primary source documents. What is lacking, however, is a more practical examination of Morris dancing and its accompanying music, as it was performed during the early modern era. Due to a recent resurgence in the popularity of Morris dancing in the UK, modern musical publications focus on dance tunes only from the eighteenth century or later. There is, consequently, a lack of knowledge amongst current practitioners about music used for Morris dancing in the period 1550-1700. This is a time when Morris dancing was deeply connected to public life, as dancers and their accompanying musicians were supported by rural parishes for fundraising events during regular festivals that aligned with traditional harvest-time and farming practices. This project will have a focus in performance alongside traditional research outputs for dissemination, to share the work with local creative industry groups and the general public. The research will trace and document music used for Morris dancing in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England and its relationship to the wider European tradition. It will explore the ways in which the accompanying music was performed through musicological and practice-based research techniques including archival and textual study and rehearsal on period instruments. This study will provide academics, practitioners and the general public with a performance framework for Morris dancing during its most prolific period of participation in early modern England from 1550-1700.
